The sky on
your birthday.
“Aurora Timelapse Over Italian Alps” is copyrighted by Cristian Bigontina. NASA has permission to show it and we don't, so it isn't on this card.
See it on NASA's siteA powerful auroral storm, caused by an X-class solar flare, created a global display a few days ago. This timelapse from the Italian Alps captures the red glow of energetic particles striking oxygen atoms high in Earth's atmosphere. Vertical streaks of light dance across the sky, a visible connection to our planet's magnetic field. Such displays are usually confined to higher latitudes.
