The Magnificent Tail of Comet McNaught

NASA APOD · Robert H. McNaught
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet McNaught, also known as C/2006 P1, was one of the brightest comets in decades. Its ion tail, made of gas ionized by the Sun, stretched for millions of miles. Observers in the Southern Hemisphere saw it best in 2007, just after sunset. The tail's complex filaments are shaped by the solar wind.
