These two galaxies, cataloged as Arp 273, are over 300 million light-years away. Their twisted and distorted shapes are caused by mutual gravitational forces during close encounters. Such interactions are common, and these galaxies provide a clear example of how they unfold. The colorful, spiky stars in the foreground are within our own Milky Way.
