Messier 109 is a barred spiral galaxy, the 109th entry in Charles Messier's catalog. It sits in Ursa Major, just below the Big Dipper's bowl. The bright star Phecda, Gamma Ursa Majoris, creates a glare in the upper right. M109's central bar resembles the Greek letter theta.
