Globular Cluster M5

NASA APOD · Anglo-Australian Telescope Board
COSMIC MESSAGE

M5 is a globular cluster, a sphere of about 100,000 stars, all gravitationally bound. These stars formed together and orbit the cluster's center, while the cluster itself orbits the center of our Milky Way. About 160 such clusters are known, forming a halo around our galaxy. Their distribution helped astronomers realize our Sun is not at the galactic center.
