The Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, named for Nobel laureate Arthur Holly Compton, launched in 1991 to explore the universe in gamma-ray energies. This image shows the massive observatory held in the Space Shuttle Atlantis's payload bay. Astronaut Jerry Ross and his colleague Jay Apt had just freed a jammed antenna before releasing it into orbit.
