The Extraordinary Spiral in LL Pegasi

NASA APOD · Jonathan Lodge
COSMIC MESSAGE

This strange spiral structure in LL Pegasi is likely related to a binary star system. One star is entering the planetary nebula phase and ejecting its outer atmosphere. The spiral spans about a third of a light-year across and has four or five complete turns. A new layer appears about every 800 years, matching the orbital period of the stars.
