The Swirling Center of NGC 4261

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Hubble Space Telescope looked at NGC 4261, an elliptical galaxy, and found gas and dust swirling into its center. Astronomers believe this disk is the remnant of a smaller galaxy that fell in hundreds of millions of years ago. At the heart of it all, there is almost certainly a massive black hole. Collisions like this may create active galactic nuclei, such as quasars.
