Accretion Disk Binary System

COSMIC MESSAGE
Most stars exist in multiple systems, unlike our solitary Sun. In a binary, the more massive star evolves faster, becoming a white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole. Later, if the companion star expands and is close enough, its outer atmosphere can fall onto the compact object. This diagram illustrates such an accretion disk system, where gas from a blue giant feeds a compact companion.
