Grand spiral galaxy NGC 5643 appears face-on in this cosmic portrait. About 55 million light-years distant, it spans over 100,000 light-years in the southern constellation Lupus. The Hubble Space Telescope captured its inner 40,000 light-years in sharp detail. Its spiral arms wind from a yellowish central region dominated by light from old stars, while the arms themselves are full of younger, bluer stars.
