Ganymede's icy surface is slowly being pulled apart. This image from the Galileo spacecraft shows complex surface details, including sunlit ridges rising above ice-plains. Circular features are impact craters. Galileo passed within 10,000 kilometers of Ganymede's surface in June 1996.
