COSMIC MESSAGE

The Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, is the closest major galaxy to our Milky Way. It is a spiral galaxy, much like our own, and contains hundreds of billions of stars. The distinct stars scattered around Andromeda in this image are actually foreground stars within our own galaxy. M31 and the Milky Way dominate the Local Group of galaxies.
