7,000 Stars And The Milky Way

NASA APOD · Lund Observatory,
COSMIC MESSAGE

This panorama of the sky is a 1940s drawing from Lund Observatory in Sweden. Draftsmen used a mathematical distortion to map the entire sky onto an oval image. The plane of our Milky Way Galaxy runs along the center, with the north galactic pole at the top. Seven thousand individual stars are shown as white dots, their size indicating brightness.
