Rivers in the Sun
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Sun's surface is not static, it shifts and flows. While we've known for a long time that the Sun rotates, and that its center rotates faster than its poles, new measurements reveal more. The Solar Oscillations Investigations group of the SOHO Observatory found that hot, electrically charged gas flows along and beneath the Sun's surface. This computer-generated diagram shows these 'solar rivers' and their speeds.
