Closeup of Antennae Galaxy Collision

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Two galaxies are colliding in the constellation Corvus. When galaxies collide, the stars within them usually do not, because galaxies are mostly empty space. However, during this slow, hundred-million-year collision, one galaxy can gravitationally rip the other apart. Dust and gas from both galaxies do collide, creating dark dust lanes and bright star-forming regions visible in the wreckage.
