M1: Filaments of the Crab Nebula

NASA APOD · S. Kohle, T. Credner et al. (AIUB)
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Crab Nebula, M1, is the remnant of a star that exploded in 1054 AD, an event recorded by Chinese astronomers. Its mysterious filaments appear to have less mass and higher speeds than expected from the initial explosion. The colors in the image indicate the behavior of electrons in different parts of the nebula, revealing complex physical processes.
