Nozomi, Japan's first Mars orbiter, launched in July 1998. It used Earth and Moon flybys to gain speed for its journey to Mars, arriving in October 1999. The mission studied Mars' atmosphere, magnetic field, and parts of its surface. This image shows the spacecraft's view of Earth and the Moon together during one of its slingshot maneuvers.
