Bright Leonids

NASA APOD · Olivier Staiger
COSMIC MESSAGE

The 1998 Leonid Meteor Shower featured numerous bright fireballs, with its peak occurring earlier than predicted. Observers in the Canary Islands, in an ideal viewing location, recorded a maximum of 200 to 250 meteors per hour near dawn on November 17. While not as intense as the 1966 Leonid storm, it still provided a spectacular display for those with clear skies.
