Twisting Meteor Train

NASA APOD · Tom Bailey (Des Moines Astronomical Society)
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image captures a twisting, smoke-like trail left by a Leonid meteor. Meteors blaze through our atmosphere at 70 kilometers per second, about 100 kilometers above Earth. The trails, made of glowing, hot, ionized gas, can be visible for several minutes as high-altitude winds distort them. Another fainter Leonid meteor is also visible in the frame.
