Messier 101 is an enormous spiral galaxy, almost twice the size of our own Milky Way, about 170,000 light-years across. It was one of the first spiral nebulae ever observed through Lord Rosse's Leviathan telescope in the 19th century. This Hubble Space Telescope image, a mosaic of 51 exposures, reveals its intricate spiral arms and bright star-forming regions. It's a true galactic giant in our cosmic neighborhood.
