COSMIC MESSAGE
Quasar 3C279 appears as a faint, star-like object in visible light. However, in June 1991, a gamma-ray telescope on NASA's Compton Gamma Ray Observatory discovered it to be one of the brightest objects in the gamma-ray sky. This false-color image shows the quasar in gamma-rays, photons with more than 40 million times the energy of visible light.
