M87 is a giant elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster, about 55 million light-years from Earth. It hosts a supermassive black hole at its center, which blasts out a powerful jet of plasma visible in radio and X-ray wavelengths. This image shows the galaxy's bright core and the surrounding halo of stars. The smaller, nearby galaxies are gravitationally bound to M87.
