Solar Shock Wave
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
On September 24, 1997, a shock wave blasted across the Sun's surface at speeds of 250 to 600 kilometers per second. Observer Barry Reynolds photographed the expanding shock front in the light emitted by hydrogen atoms. His discovery was confirmed by an extreme ultraviolet image from the SOHO satellite observatory. That image showed the shock ramming through the Sun's upper atmosphere, originating from a bright solar flare.
