Liberty Bell 7 was the second American spacecraft to carry an astronaut into space, with Gus Grissom at the controls. This Mercury capsule made a suborbital flight in 1961, reaching an altitude of 118 miles. Unlike Alan Shepard's earlier flight, Liberty Bell 7 had a window and a new manual control system. The capsule now rests three miles deep in the Atlantic Ocean.
