Betelgeuse, a red supergiant in Orion, is about 600 light years away. This Hubble Space Telescope image is the first direct picture of a star's surface other than our sun. Betelgeuse is over a thousand times larger than the sun. If it were in our solar system, it would extend past Jupiter's orbit.
