Asteroid 1999 JM8, nearly four kilometers across, passed 8.5 million kilometers from Earth in early August. This object was unknown before May of that year. Radar from the Arecibo and Goldstone radio telescopes tracked and imaged the Apollo asteroid as it approached. Although 1999 JM8 missed Earth, objects of this size have the potential to disrupt modern civilization if they impact.
