A Superior Conjunction Of Mercury
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
A superior conjunction occurs when an interior planet is on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth. Mercury, the innermost planet, reaches this point in its orbit today. The SOHO observatory's coronagraph captured this recent picture, showing Mercury very close to the Sun. The coronagraph uses an internal disk to block the intense solar glare.
