COSMIC MESSAGE

This image of the Sun shows numerous sunspots, which are regions of strong magnetic fields appearing dark because they are cooler than their surroundings. These sunspots can be as large as or larger than Earth. The number of sunspots increases and decreases over an 11-year cycle, and the Sun was approaching its maximum activity when this photo was taken. A planet, Mercury, is also visible as a small dot transiting the Sun's disk.
