NGC 6791: An Old, Large Open Cluster

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 6791 is one of the oldest and largest open star clusters we know. Most open clusters have a few hundred stars, less than a billion years old. This cluster, however, contains thousands of stars, measured to be about 8 billion years old. What is puzzling is that these stars are relatively rich in heavy elements, or "metals," compared to other old stars.
