XMM-Newton First Light: X-Rays From The LMC
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The European Space Agency's XMM-Newton X-ray observatory released this 'first light' image of a star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This churning area of star birth and death was chosen to test the observatory's X-ray imaging capabilities. The false-color image translates low-energy X-rays to red, medium-energy to green, and high-energy to blue. This allows astronomers to study the hottest, most energetic phenomena.
