On Valentine's Day in 2000, the NEAR spacecraft approached asteroid 433 Eros and photographed what appeared to be a heart-shaped depression. This 5-kilometer-long feature on the 33-kilometer-long asteroid was an unexpected sight. The NEAR mission made history by becoming the first spacecraft to orbit an asteroid.
