The NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft orbited just 22 miles from the asteroid Eros. These images, taken on July 19 and 24, show its pocked and mottled surface in detail, revealing features as small as 19 feet across. X-ray and gamma-ray studies suggest Eros is a primordial, undifferentiated asteroid.
