The Solar Spectrum

NASA APOD · Nigel Sharp
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Sun's light, passed through a prism, reveals its full spectrum of colors. This image, taken at the McMath-Pierce Solar Observatory, shows that while the Sun emits nearly every color, it appears brightest in yellow-green. The dark lines in the spectrum are caused by gases in or above the Sun's surface absorbing specific wavelengths of light.
