NGC 2244: A Star Cluster in the Rosette Nebula

NASA APOD · J. C. Cuillandre & G. Fahlman (CFHT Staff), CFHT
COSMIC MESSAGE

At the heart of the Rosette Nebula is NGC 2244, a bright open cluster of stars. These stars formed from the surrounding gas only four million years ago. Their light and stellar winds shape the nebula's appearance. High-energy light from these young stars ionizes the hydrogen gas, creating the red emission nebula.
