A 2000 Leonid Through Orion
NASA APOD · Doug Murray
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Leonid Meteor Shower occurs when Earth passes through debris left by Comet Tempel-Tuttle. This year, the shower was good, with brief periods reaching up to 400 meteors per hour in dark locations. This photo from Florida captures a Leonid meteor streaking through the constellation Orion on November 18, 2000. Each meteor is a grain of cosmic dust burning up in our atmosphere.
