COSMIC MESSAGE
The Space Shuttle Endeavour captured this view of the aurora australis, or southern lights, from 115 nautical miles above Earth. Aurorae are luminous bands of light, extending hundreds of miles high, caused by high-energy particles from the Sun interacting with our atmosphere. This time exposure from October 1994 shows the delicate colors created by these interactions.
