COSMIC MESSAGE

This infrared image of the galactic center region shows positions of candidate magnetars. These cosmic powerhouses are believed to be the strongest magnets in the galaxy. Magnetars are classified as Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs). They are likely city-sized, spinning, highly-magnetized neutron stars.
