Stars are born in the Eagle Nebula, M16, a stellar nursery 7,000 light-years away in Serpens. Its star-forming pillars of gas and dust are familiar in visible light. This false-color picture shows the nebula in infrared light, using data from ESA's Infrared Space Observatory satellite. It is dominated by infrared emission from clouds of interstellar material.
