The Southern Sky in Warm Hydrogen

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image is a map of the entire southern sky, showing warm ionized hydrogen. It was created by a robotic telescope in Chile, observing a very specific red wavelength of light. While bright emission nebulae glow intensely in this H-alpha light, diffuse warm hydrogen is spread throughout our galaxy. This map helps astronomers study the distribution of this abundant element.
