Gamma-Ray Burst, Supernova Bump

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

On November 21, 2001, satellites detected a gamma-ray burst, a flash of high-energy photons lasting less than a minute. Astronomers have since followed the fading optical light from its location. These Hubble Space Telescope images, recorded from December 4, 2001, to May 5, 2002, show the fading transient to the right of a fuzzy, distant galaxy. This galaxy likely hosted the burst.
