Interstellar Dust Bunnies of NGC 891

NASA APOD · Jean-Charles Cuillandre
COSMIC MESSAGE

The spiral galaxy NGC 891 is seen nearly edge-on, much like our own Milky Way. High-resolution images from the Hubble Space Telescope show unusual filamentary patterns of interstellar dust extending away from its galactic disk. This dust was likely ejected from the disk into the halo by supernova explosions. Studying these fragile dust structures helps astronomers understand the dynamics of galaxy evolution.
