COSMIC MESSAGE
M83, the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy 12 million light-years away in Hydra. It spans about 40,000 light-years across. The galaxy is also called the Thousand-Ruby Galaxy due to its many reddish star-forming regions. These regions are visible near the edges of the spiral arms, where thick dust lanes are found.
