Oklo: Ancient African Nuclear Reactors

NASA APOD · Robert D. Loss, WAISRC
COSMIC MESSAGE

Nearly two billion years ago, natural nuclear reactors existed on Earth. These reactors, like Fossil Reactor 15 in Oklo, Gabon, generated heat and byproducts naturally. The yellowish rock in the photo shows uranium oxide remains from one of these ancient sites. Today, scientists study these remnants to understand the stability of fundamental physical constants.
