Planetary nebula Abell 78 is the remnant of a star that has shed its outer layers. The central star, intensely hot, emits ultraviolet light that ionizes the surrounding gas. This ionization causes the gas to glow in characteristic colors. Abell 78 is a striking example of a star's final stages, expanding into space.
