COSMIC MESSAGE

This panorama of the Moon's cratered surface was made from images returned by the US Surveyor 6 lander. In November 1967, Surveyor 6 became the first spacecraft to land on the Moon and then lift off again. NASA controllers commanded it to fire its rocket engine, lifting it four meters and moving it about 2.5 meters across the surface.
