A Sun Pillar

NASA APOD · Dave Liquorice
COSMIC MESSAGE

A sun pillar forms when sunlight reflects off falling ice crystals in cold air during sunrise or sunset. These ice crystals often have a flat, stop-sign shape and flutter to the ground nearly flat. When properly aligned, they reflect sunlight to create a column of light.
