COSMIC MESSAGE

The Gum Nebula is a supernova remnant spanning 40 degrees across the sky. It is so large and faint that it is difficult to see against the background. This wide-angle photograph highlights the nebula, which lies in the direction of the constellations Puppis and Vela. The Gum Nebula is the closest supernova remnant to us, with its front edge 450 light-years away and its back edge 1500 light-years away.
