Elements of the Swan Nebula

NASA APOD · Russell Croman
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Swan Nebula, also called Omega or Horseshoe, is a cloud of gas and dust where new stars are forming. This image highlights the different chemical elements glowing in the nebula. The dark filaments are made of carbon-based dust, blocking background starlight. Intense light from massive young stars slowly boils this dark shroud away.
