The Colorful Horsehead Nebula

NASA APOD · Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Horsehead Nebula, a dark cloud of dust and gas, is silhouetted against a glowing background of hydrogen. It is part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, about 1,500 light-years away. This nebula is an active star-forming region, with new stars beginning to coalesce within its dense material. The red glow comes from hydrogen gas ionized by the nearby bright star Sigma Orionis.
