M16: Stars from Eagle's EGGs
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Eagle Nebula, M16, is a region of active star formation about 7,000 light-years away in Serpens. This Hubble Space Telescope image from 1995 shows dense pillars of gas and dust, light-years in length. These structures contain evaporating gaseous globules, or EGGs, where new stars are forming. The intense radiation from young, bright stars erodes the surrounding low-density material, revealing these stellar nurseries.
